Scott Walden is the Principal of Marfell Community School in New Plymouth, Taranaki. With more than 26 years of experience in education, including 13 years as a principal, Scott has led across a diverse range of school settings including Intermediate, Area Schooling, and now urban primary education. His leadership is grounded in a strong commitment to equity, culturally sustaining practice, and ensuring all learners experience success.

Scott currently serves as an Executive Member of the New Zealand Principals’ Federation and is Co-President of Whiria – New Plymouth Principals Association, where he actively advocates for strong educational leadership and collaboration across the sector.

Passionate about advancing educational outcomes for Māori as Māori, Scott spent two and a half years as a Kaihoe Mātauranga and regional facilitator for the Māori Achievement Collaborative, coaching and mentoring principals within the MAC kaupapa. This work further strengthened his commitment to culturally responsive leadership and building capability within schools.

Scott is also a board member of Te Arahou Aotearoa, a professional learning and development provider focused on advancing educational and cultural success for Māori and strengthening culturally sustaining practice across Aotearoa. In addition, he serves on the board of WhyORA, an organisation dedicated to supporting taiohi and whānau to identify their aspirations and develop meaningful, rewarding career pathways.

Across all aspects of his work, Scott is dedicated to strengthening principal leadership, supporting school leaders to champion positive change, and creating education systems where equity, belonging, and success are accessible to every learner.Scott Walden_.jpg
